Do you like the idea of having photos at your home but feel a little stumped by what it would actually look like? I get it. If you’re used to your sessions taking place at an outdoor location, it can be a little daunting. But I’ll tell you this – it can actually be way simpler than you might think. Here are some ideas for your in-home family session in Huntsville.
As a Huntsville family photographer, my most favorite place to capture families is actually in their own homes. I’ve found that parents and kids are more comfortable at home than anywhere else, and it allows for genuine personality and connection to shine – which is what I believe you’ll actually be looking at in your photos for years to come.
Part of my process is to help you plan ideas for your in-home family session in Huntsville, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. For most of the session, I truly do hope to capture the love between your family. This can take place in any room, so we’ll follow the light and choose an area where there’s beautiful light streaming in through the windows. Pile up, follow the kids’ leads, and it’ll be magical!
Although documenting the love of your family at home really is as simple as being together in that pretty light, one of the beautifies of having an in-home family session is that we can utilize your everyday life to add to the story. Books and toys abound, you’ve made memories with your kids, and you probably have an idea of the kinds of things that will keep your kids engaged. So let’s utilize that!
Table of Contents
Read Books with Your Kids

Have a favorite bedtime read? Does your child (like mine) have a certain book memorized because you’ve read it together so many times? Let’s pull out the books and capture you reading together! I promise that years down the road, when the picture book piles are put away, you’re going to love having a photo of these moments.
Play with Your Child’s Favorite Toys

This is one of my favorite ideas for your in-home family session in Huntsville, because it’s so simple and brings immediate nostalgia. Sit in the floor and just play with your child. Trucks? Baby dolls? Dinosaurs? Legos? It seems like their obsessions will last forever, but as a mom of an almost nine-year old whose passion with trucks did, in fact, come to an end (cue my mama heart breaking), I can tell you that one love will be replaced by another without your even realizing it. So let’s take some time to photograph the joy your child finds in the little things right now.
Have a Snuggle Party

Pile up on the couch, bed, or floor, and just snuggle. It may be a calm and tender time, it may turn into wrestling! But that’s part of the beauty – no two families’ photos will be the same, because no two families will be the same. And that’s how it should be! I love it when the prompt “falls apart” and I get to see who you really are!
Run Around the Backyard

If your family loves playing outside in the yard together, let’s use that! Just because it’s an in-home session doesn’t mean we have to stay inside. Hop on the swings, grab the bubbles, or just chase your toddler in a game of tag. This is a chance to let loose and just make memories together while I look for the magic that’s already there.
Bake a Treat

Does your family love to bake together, or are Friday pizza nights part of your family culture? It can be such a fun time to pull out the mixing bowls and actually bake something together! Even if your kitchen doesn’t get the best light, we can move the activity to a different part of the house and just have fun. This is one of my family’s favorites, and I adore the photos we have together making some of our favorite treats.
So, you see? The ideas for your in-home family session in Huntsville are endless. These just scratch the surface. I can work with you to decide what images will be most meaningful for you, because I know that years from now, when your babies are grown, you’re going to love pulling out these photos and reminiscing together.
