Best Family Photo Locations in Huntsville, AL

If you’re planning on having family photos taken soon, chances are you’re starting to wonder where the best family photo locations in Huntsville might be. Our city is beautiful, and there’s such a variety of options to choose from! From a quaint downtown to beautiful gardens to stunning views just outside the city, you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite Huntsville photo spots, as well as a few tips for choosing the right one for you family.

Before deciding on the exact location for your Huntsville family session, first decide what kind of vibe you’re looking for. Think about your unique family and what would tell the story of you best. For example – if you never go downtown and don’t really enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city, downtown might not be the place for you. What story do you want to tell? What memories do you want to capture? Keeping all of this in mind can help you choose the best backdrop for your photos.

As your photographer, I am happy to help you with this process! Upon booking with Mallory Bell Photography, I will send you a questionnaire to get to know your family better. We can discuss your ideas for your session, and I’ll recommend a few options for you. I love helping my families plan their sessions, from location to wardrobe, to make the process as easy and seamless as possible.

Now, let’s look at a few of the best family photo locations in and around Huntsville!

Delano Park – Decatur

While this location isn’t technically in Huntsville, it’s just down the road in beautiful Decatur, Alabama. Delano Park has an absolutely gorgeous garden filled with roses, hydrangeas, and topiaries. Free to the public, the garden gets beautiful light and offers several backdrops for variety in your final gallery. Kids love looking around the flowers and walking paths and generally feel very comfortable at this location. While it’s beautiful year-round thanks to the well-manicured bushes, it really hits its peak in the late spring through fall.

Mooresville

Right off the interstate, historic Mooresville, Alabama is such a wonderful option for family photos near Huntsville. It includes a large field, a small garden next to a church, white picket fences, and beautiful homes. I love this location for families because we can get a great variety of scenes, and there’s plenty of safe space for kids to run around. I recommend this location spring through fall. You really can’t go wrong with Mooresville!

Downtown Huntsville

Downtown Huntsville is a lovely option for best family photo locations in Huntsville! Especially if city life speaks to you and your family, we can really tell your family’s story here. From beautiful Franklin Street and gorgeous churches to Big Spring Park and Constitution Village, there are several spots to choose from.

A few tips if you do choose Downtown:

  • Be prepared to walk a little. If you want to include more than one backdrop for your session, some walking will be involved. It’s easier to walk than to find a new parking spot, especially if your session is taking place on a weekend evening. If your kids are little, bring a stroller to minimize any overexhaustion!
  • Plan which locations you want ahead of time, and which are your priority. Because of the abundance of settings Downtown, it’s best to narrow it down to 2-3 ahead of time. This will help us pace your session so we don’t spend too much time in one location or waste time wandering around.
  • Plan for a slightly earlier session start time. Because of the tall buildings, the light can get blocked a little earlier as the sun sets. So if your session is on a weekday, you may need to plan to leave work a little early to get downtown for your session.
  • Bonus idea: Use this location for a fun (possibly rare) parents-only session! Make it a date night and get reservations for one of the delicious restaurants!

Weathington Park

Of all of the best family photo locations in and near Huntsville, this one is the farthest to drive. But the overlook at Weathington Park in Section, Alabama is worth it! The park sits over the Tennessee River surrounded by breathtaking hills, giving the most lovely backdrop for your photos. I don’t like to recommend this one when it’s very cold, because there’s also some wind at this high point. It can get really chilly, which kids don’t typically enjoy. But year-round, Weathington Park is an absolutely beautiful place to take photos!

Bonus Location: Your Home!

My list of the best family photo locations in Huntsville wouldn’t be complete without recommending your own home! While it’s often not people’s first idea when deciding where to have a family photo session, it can truly be so sweet to have photos taken inside your home. Your kids are most comfortable here, you’re surrounded by the people you love in the place you love most, and you can tell your family’s unique story most clearly right inside your own four walls. It doesn’t have to be grand or Pinterest-worthy, because it’s yours. If you choose an in-home session, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to choose the right rooms and spots. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming or intimidating at all!
