I remember when my first baby was born, I was so nervous for his newborn session. I worried about what we would do if he cried the whole time, whether he would sleep for photos, what to wear. The list goes on.
It turns out, these worries are pretty common! I hear them from lots of clients as they’re preparing for their own newborn sessions with me. I’m here to tell you to relax. Take a deep breath, and let me help you know what to expect.
1. WE’LL FOLLOW YOUR NEWBORN’S LEAD
Newborns are unpredictable. One day they may love to lie down on their back to sleep, and the next day all the want to do is snuggle in your arms. That is ok! One of the beauties of a lifestyle newborn session is capturing your family just as you are. I’m there to document all of the sweet moments for your family, and I’m in no rush. Baby refuses to let you put her down? No problem! We can get beautiful images of you holding her in your arms. Your little one wants to eat right away? Great! Feed your baby, and we will pick right back up. Sometimes images of feeding time can be the most special, too. Letting baby take the lead at your session is always easier than forcing something.
2. I’LL GUIDE YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
As soon as you book your newborn session, I’ll start helping you plan the details. Mamas often request help in dressing themselves and their families for their photos, and I love offering guidance! I have a collection of dresses in various sizes for you to borrow so that you look and feel your best, and I can gather ideas and options for the rest of your family, too. During our session together, I’ll also guide you through simple prompts and poses to highlight your family’s love during this sweet newborn season.
3. WE’LL GET SIBLINGS INVOLVED
I love when we can involve older siblings! It’s so sweet to see their curiosity and adoration for their new baby. Sometimes big brothers and sisters really want to be a part of the session, and other times they would rather do their own thing. Either way is ok. I like to start off with taking time to connect with your older child before photographing anything so that he or she will be comfortable working with me. Then we can get those sweet sibling and whole-family photos. After that, I like to let siblings come and go as they please. The candid moments are what I’m after, so allowing older brothers and sisters to interact organically with your newborn is perfect!

Such a precious time.❤ So reassuring for new parents. I’m always nervous for no reason before sessions! You have so much grace, encouragement, and expertise Mallory.
Thank you, Tasi! I’ll be honest – I get a little nervous when my own family is about to have a session too! It’s normal, but hopefully as the session gets started the nerves fade and it’s just fun and sweetness!
